Scott F. Gibson
|
Dedicated to his law practice for 23 years, Scott still finds the time to read a good book, cook a creative meal for his family, enjoy one of his children's concerts or spend a quiet evening with his wife.
As a founding partner and the current managing partner of the Mesa law firm of Gibson Ferrin & Riggs, PLC, Scott helps businesses and individuals navigate the challenges of the legal system. His practice focuses on intellectual property and employment law and helps businesses prosper by properly managing their intangible assets.
Over the years he has developed a reputation for his uncanny ability to quickly discern the most important issues in a case and to focus on ways to resolve rather than to expand litigation. However, when a case cannot be resolved through legal motions or favorable negotiations, Scott is a well prepared and capable trial attorney.
But his passion for law doesn't stop there.
With a keen interest in writing and an undergraduate journalism background from Arizona State University, Scott continually uses the written word to share his knowledge – be it with his law students at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, through his popular blog at www.biziboom.com or his frequent business related tweets.
“I enjoy writing,” he says.
He also feels that there is a science fiction novel inside of him just waiting to make it onto paper.
“I'm drawn to the genre of science fiction because is let's you be innovative, to create a set of rules of your own and to tell stories about the human condition without necessarily moralizing about a particular situation,” he explains.
Scott is not one who is satisfied with only his past achievements; he continues to expand his knowledge and skills through diligent study and application.
In the fall of 2005, Scott enrolled as a member of the inaugural class in the LL.M. program in Biotechnology and Genomics at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at ASU. The program is the first of its type in the world and Scott is one of a small group of lawyers who have completed the program.
Scott says the curriculum was challenging but rewarding, providing him a unique perspective on critical legal issues arising from these emerging technologies.
Following graduation from the program in 2007, Scott was offered an opportunity to instruct his own class in the college of law. He is in his second year of teaching Law 691: “Trade Secrets and Restrictive Covenants” on Tuesday evenings at the Tempe campus.
On other evenings he would rather be at home.
“I am, first of all, a husband and father,” the father-of-four says. “My family is my greatest joy in life.”
“If I could choose to do anything – it wouldn't matter what – as long as I could do it with my wife,” say Scott, who recently celebrated 22 years of marriage.
Expanding his knowledge and skills applies to other areas of Scott's life as well.
For instance, he looks forward each year to the family Christmas Eve dinner celebration, for which he is the main chef.
He says preparation starts in early October when he pulls out a variety of cookbooks and begins picking new recipes to try.
Although questioned once by a son about why the family doesn't have “normal food” for Christmas, Scott believes they do enjoy seeing what delicacies might turn up on the table at the annual feast.
Scott's overarching philosophy in how he deals with others – whether it is a client, a family member, a student or a stranger on the street – is simple, but insightful: “Treat people right.”
“Be honorable, be fair,” he adds. “Do the right thing, follow correct principles and good things will happen.” |
